Y-Chromosome Microdeletions
(YCM)
Y-chromosome microdeletions (YCM) are small, deletions of genetic material on the Y chromosome, often affecting regions important for sperm production and male fertility. These deletions are typically associated with male infertility, particularly in men with low sperm count or azoospermia (absence of sperm). YCM are most commonly found in three specific regions of the Y chromosome: AZFa, AZFb, and AZFc. Genetic testing, such as Y-chromosome microdeletion testing, can help diagnose these deletions in men experiencing infertility. The presence of these deletions can affect the choice of fertility treatments, such as sperm retrieval or assisted reproductive technologies. YCM is inherited in a paternal pattern, meaning fathers with these deletions can pass them on to their sons. Early detection can aid in providing appropriate counseling and treatment options for affected individuals.
